Beyond the Canals: 8 things you absolutely must do in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a city of iconic canals, charming bike rides and rich history. But beyond its famous waterways, the Dutch capital is brimming with unique experiences and hidden gems that deserve your attention. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveller, here are 8 must-do activities that will give you a taste of Amsterdam’s vibrant culture, creativity and delicious treats.

A helpful tip for your trip to Amsterdam: leave your cash at home! We discovered that most places in the city only accept cards, so it’s best to rely on your debit or credit card for payments throughout your stay.

1. Indulge in Ethical chocolate at Tony’s Chocolonely Super Store

Chocolate lovers, rejoice! A visit to Tony’s Chocolonely Super Store is a treat for your taste buds and your conscience. Tony’s Chocolonely is on a mission to make chocolate 100% slave-free, and their superstore is a haven for chocolate enthusiasts. Here, you can explore a rainbow of chocolate bars in various flavors, create your own custom chocolate, and learn about the brand’s journey toward ethical chocolate production. It’s not just a store—it’s an experience that will leave you with a sweet memory and a deeper understanding of the chocolate industry.

However, a word of advice for families or anyone with mobility issues—be prepared. The store isn’t particularly wheelchair or pram-friendly due to the tight stairs leading to the store. When we visited in April, we found it necessary to fold our daughter’s pram to navigate the store comfortably. So if you’re traveling with little ones, it’s something to keep in mind.

On the bright side, the Super Store’s proximity to Amsterdam Centraal makes it a perfect final stop before catching your train or flight. If you didn’t get a chance to visit during your stay, it’s easy to swing by before you leave the city.

Enjoy your chocolate-filled adventure!

2. Saviour the Flakiest Pastries at Rene’s Croissanterie

Nestled in the bustling heart of Amsterdam, Rene’s Croissanterie is a must-visit for pastry lovers. Known for serving some of the best croissants in the city, this cozy spot offers a delightful array of baked goods. Whether you’re in the mood for a classic buttery croissant, a pain au chocolat, or something savory, Rene’s never disappoints. Grab a coffee to go and enjoy your pastry while exploring the nearby streets.

It’s the ideal spot to grab a treat before or after exploring the bustling Dam area, as this bakery is a stone’s throw away from the famous Dam Square. You can enjoy your pastries while strolling around the square, taking in the sights and sounds of Amsterdam’s vibrant city center.

However, be prepared to wait a bit—Rene’s is quite popular, and you might find a queue, especially during peak hours. But trust me, the wait is worth it! The delicious pastries and the charming atmosphere of the Dam make for a quintessential Amsterdam experience.

3. Get a bird’s-eye view from A’dam Lookout

For a panoramic view of Amsterdam that will take your breath away, head to the A’DAM Lookout. Located atop the A’DAM Tower in Amsterdam North, this observation deck offers stunning 360-degree views of the city. But the real thrill lies in the “Over The Edge” swing—the highest in Europe—that lets you soar above the cityscape. It’s an adrenaline-pumping experience that offers a unique perspective of Amsterdam’s sprawling beauty.

Located just across the IJ River from Amsterdam Centraal, this iconic observation tower is a great destination for families and visitors of all abilities. The best part? It’s completely wheelchair and pram-friendly, ensuring everyone can enjoy the experience.

When we visited, we felt a bit privileged as having our daughter’s pram allowed us to skip the queue—definitely a nice perk! The elevators are spacious and easily accessible, making the ascent to the top smooth and hassle-free.

Once you’re up on the Sky Deck, prepare yourself for some strong winds. The panoramic views of Amsterdam are incredible, but the wind can be pretty intense, so make sure to hold onto your hat! Whether you’re taking in the cityscape or snapping photos, the A’dam Lookout is an unforgettable experience that truly captures the essence of Amsterdam.

4. Dive into a world of colour at Wondr Experience

Looking for an Instagram-worthy adventure? The Wondr Experience is an interactive art installation designed to immerse you in a world of color, creativity, and play. Each room in this vibrant space is filled with eye-popping installations, from a pool of marshmallows to a confetti shower. It’s a playground for adults where you can unleash your inner child and capture some unforgettable photos. Perfect for a rainy day or when you just want to escape reality for a while.

We visited with our 3-year-old daughter, and she absolutely loved it! The colorful, immersive rooms filled with playful installations kept her entertained and engaged throughout our visit.

However, it’s important to note that Wondr Experience has specific timeframes when children are allowed, so you’ll want to plan accordingly. Before you go, be sure to check their website for the most accurate and up-to-date information on visiting hours for families with children. This way, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Whether you’re diving into a pool of marshmallows, getting lost in a sea of pink foam, or dancing through confetti showers, Wondr Experience offers a magical adventure that your little ones will cherish just as much as you do.

5. Explore contemporary art at Moco Museum

Art lovers should not miss the Moco Museum, which showcases works by some of the most influential modern and contemporary artists. The museum is housed in a beautiful old mansion on Museumplein, right next to the Van Gogh Museum. Here, you can admire iconic pieces by Banksy, Andy Warhol, and other contemporary greats. The museum’s compact size means you can enjoy a rich cultural experience without the overwhelming crowds, making it a perfect stop for a dose of inspiration.

However, if you’re visiting with young children, be aware that the museum is not pram-friendly. In fact, prams are not allowed inside due to the narrow spaces and delicate exhibits.

When we visited, we were pleasantly surprised by how helpful the staff were at the entrance. They kindly took our folded pram and stored it safely, allowing us to explore the museum without any worries. This small gesture made our visit much more enjoyable, as we could focus on the art and navigate the galleries with ease.

So, while you’ll need to leave the pram behind, rest assured that the Moco Museum staff will take good care of it while you and your little ones soak in the creative atmosphere.

6. Feast on Avocado delights at the Avocado Show

If you’re an avocado aficionado, The Avocado Show is your dream come true. This trendy restaurant is entirely dedicated to the beloved green fruit, offering an array of avocado-centric dishes that are as beautiful as they are delicious. From avocado burgers to colourful salads and mouthwatering toasts, every dish is a work of art. The Avocado Show’s commitment to sustainability makes the experience even more satisfying, knowing that your meal is as good for the planet as it is for you.

When you visit, there’s one item you absolutely cannot miss: the Avo Fries. These crispy, golden slices of avocado are a game-changer. When we tried them, they were out of this world—perfectly seasoned, with a creamy inside and a satisfying crunch.

So, while everything on the menu is a feast for the senses, make sure the Avo Fries are on your list. You won’t regret it!

7. Get Festive at Peppernuts Amsterdam

I was absolutely thrilled to stumble upon Peppernuts Amsterdam completely by chance. It was one of those unexpected discoveries that instantly brightens your day and adds a special touch to your trip. The vibrant shop, filled with the delightful aroma of freshly baked spiced cookies, immediately drew me in. Every bite of their traditional Dutch “pepernoten” was a sweet reminder of why I love exploring new places—sometimes the best experiences are the ones you don’t plan for.

Stumbling upon Peppernuts Amsterdam was one of those delightful surprises that make exploring a city so special. However, it’s worth noting that the shop isn’t pram-friendly due to the stairs at the entrance. We discovered this firsthand, but the surprise and joy of finding such a unique store more than made up for the inconvenience. If you’re traveling with a little one, just be prepared to carry them in or fold the pram to navigate the steps.

Despite the small accessibility challenge, Peppernuts Amsterdam is a gem that’s well worth a visit, offering a sweet taste of Dutch tradition in every bag of kruidnoten.

8. Enjoy a slice of heaven at Café Winkel 43

No trip to Amsterdam is complete without trying a slice of apple pie, and Café Winkel 43 is the place to do it. Located in the charming Jordaan district, this café is famous for serving the best apple pie in the city. With its perfectly spiced filling, chunky apple pieces, and flaky crust, this pie is nothing short of legendary. Pair it with a dollop of whipped cream and a cup of coffee for the ultimate Amsterdam treat. Whether you’re a foodie or just someone who appreciates good dessert, Café Winkel 43 will not disappoint.

The café is a favorite among both locals and tourists, which means it can get quite crowded. The queue for a table, especially during peak hours, can become quite long. However, we were fortunate when we arrived—despite its popularity, we managed to find a spot outside, which was perfect because the weather was beautiful. By the time we left, though, the queue had grown significantly, reflecting just how sought-after a seat at Winkel 43 can be.

Amsterdam is a city that rewards the curious traveler. While its canals and historic landmarks are undoubtedly captivating, stepping off the beaten path reveals a wealth of experiences that are both unique and unforgettable. From indulging in ethical chocolates to savoring the city’s best apple pie, these eight activities offer a taste of Amsterdam’s diverse cultural and culinary landscape. So the next time you find yourself in this beautiful city, make sure to go beyond the canals and discover the hidden treasures that await.
