In a world where time is one of our most precious resources, making the most out of your vacation days is essential. Whether you’re working a traditional 9-5 or navigating a shift schedule, maximising your time off ensures you get the rejuvenation you deserve while still checking destinations off your bucket list. Here are some smart travel planning tips to help you stretch those vacation days without feeling rushed.
- Strategic use of long weekends
- Combine paid time off with remote work (if possible)
- Book Red-Eye or early morning flights
- Plan weekend getaways
- Use vacation time wisely
- Create a travel wishlist and stay flexible
- Maximise shift work benefits
- Consider staycations or local explorations
- Travel during shoulder season
Strategic use of long weekends
One of the simplest ways to maximise your vacation days is by leveraging public holidays and long weekends. Take a look at your calendar early in the year to identify potential long weekends, and plan trips around them. By adding just one or two extra vacation days before or after a holiday, you can turn a three-day weekend into a five-day mini getaway.
Tip: Some holidays might fall in the middle of the week. In this case, take the days before or after off to extend your break!
Combine paid time off with remote work (if possible)
In today’s hybrid and remote work environments, you may have the option to work from anywhere. Consider taking advantage of this flexibility by working remotely for part of your vacation. This approach allows you to enjoy a new destination for an extended period without dipping too heavily into your vacation bank.
Tip: Make sure to choose destinations with strong Wi-Fi and a conducive work environment so you can balance productivity with relaxation.
Book Red-Eye or early morning flights
To get the most out of your travel days, opt for red-eye flights or early morning departures. Arriving at your destination in the morning or midday gives you a full day to explore, even if you were working the day before.
For a long time now, we’ve made it a habit to book early flights when heading out on vacation, so we can start exploring as soon as we arrive. On the way back, we always choose later flights to make the most out of our last day. This way, we get almost a full day of adventure before heading home, squeezing every bit of enjoyment out of our trip!
Tip: For red-eye flights, pack an eye mask, noise-cancelling headphones, and a neck pillow to help you get some rest on the plane and hit the ground running when you arrive.
Plan weekend getaways
Sometimes all you need is a quick weekend escape to feel refreshed. Short, spontaneous weekend getaways can be incredibly rewarding. Explore local or regional destinations that you can easily reach by car or a short flight. This allows you to satisfy your wanderlust without taking any time off work.
Tip: Choose destinations within 2-3 hours of travel so you can spend more time exploring and less time commuting.

Use vacation time wisely
When you take time off, plan ahead to ensure you’re making the most of it. Instead of spreading your vacation days out thinly throughout the year, consider taking longer vacation days in one go. This allows you to fully disconnect and immerse yourself in your travels. Alternatively, you can stagger shorter trips throughout the year to have more frequent breaks.
We used to split our trips between Romania and Bulgaria, spending a week in each country to visit our families. But because of flight schedules and often high prices when flying from our local airport, making us choose an airport further away, we ended up using 15 vacation days for just 6 days in Romania and 7 days in Bulgaria. It was frustrating, as the travel logistics ate into our actual vacation time.
Recently, we made a change and now take an extended vacation that incorporates both countries in one trip. We plan it to start on a Friday or Saturday, using the same 15 days off but spending 3 full weeks with family. This way we get about 10 days in each country, with 1 day for travel between them. It has been a game-changer, allowing us to truly unwind and enjoy our time off work!
Create a travel wishlist and stay flexible
Planning in advance is key to maximising your vacation days, but so is flexibility. Keep a travel wishlist and keep an eye on flights and accommodation deals for those destinations. Flexibility with your dates allows you to take advantage of last-minute deals and promotions that might fit well with your work schedule.
Tip: Use travel apps, and deal-alert platforms that notify you when prices drop for destinations you’re interested in.
Maximise shift work benefits
If you work shifts, you might have more flexibility than you realise. Shift workers often have stretches of consecutive days off, which can be perfect for squeezing in a longer vacation without needing extra time off. Coordinate your shifts and your time off for a well-deserved break.
Tip: If you have flexibility in shift swapping, coordinate with colleagues to create longer blocks of free time for your travels.
Consider staycations or local explorations
When international travel isn’t an option, don’t underestimate the power of a staycation or a local adventure. Explore new parts of your city or region that you might not have considered before. This way, you’re still getting the mental break that travel offers, without the added time and expense of going far from home.
Tip: Look for unique experiences in your area such as local food tours, hiking trails, or cultural events that can make your staycation feel special.
Travel during shoulder season

The shoulder season- just before or after peak travel times- offers an ideal balance of fewer crowds and lower prices. Planning your trips during these periods can help you make your vacation days feel even more luxurious, as you’ll be able to explore popular destinations without the usual hustle and bustle.
We’ve always avoided going on vacation during the high season because of the crowds, higher prices, and general hassle. Over the years, we discovered that travelling off-season has way more benefits- fewer people around, lower costs, and often a more relaxed atmosphere. We still get to enjoy beautiful destinations, but with a much better experience and for a fraction of the price!
Tip: Research shoulder seasons for specific destinations to find the best times to visit, and plan accordingly to maximise value and time.
By using these smart travel planning tips, you can maximise your vacation days and make the most out of every trip. Whether you’re jet-setting to a faraway destination or enjoying a quick weekend escape, thoughtful planning will allow you to see the world while keeping your work-life balance intact.
Happy travels!
